NO Apologies Needed From The “Holier Than Thou"

A poster named Rosalie Sykora wrote a tongue-in-cheek letter to our editor titled “An apology to liberals for conservative views.” I have no doubt that Rosalie is a decent, god fearing, Christian conservative but it’s views like hers that make me keep my politics secular. When you interject religion into politics at the scale that she does; it leads to a situation like we are seeing in Syria and Egypt.
Bless her heart, Rosalie may have forgotten “Matthew 6:1-34
Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven

I haven’t seen a comparison between liberals and conservatives like she described in a very longtime. It’s as if they look up all the good words in the dictionary and applied it to conservatism and left all the bad definitions to describe liberals.

Rosalie, I certainly don’t back away from supporting black leaders and civil rights activists like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson when they are fighting for justice and equality. I certainly am an admirer of the Clintons and President Obama. Like many other legislators, I’ve sided with and have been against the views of Charlie Rangel and Sheila Jackson Lee. You didn’t mention San Diego mayor, Bob Filner, but I believe he belongs in jail and I’m glad that the DNC, and the California Democrats are actively trying to run him out of office. Anthony Wiener needs to grow up and the voters of New York will send him a message. I don’t know what Anthony Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, has done to be ashamed of. She was on the staff of Hillary Clinton and is a political consultant, but maybe the fact you don’t like her is that she’s a Muslim.

I don’t think Pope Francis judges any one by their ideology or political affiliation, and I’m fairly certain Mother Theresa would not have either.

I noticed that you mentioned visiting a church and synagogue, but you left out a mosque; was there a message there?

I admire Antoinette Tuff and I don't know her political affiliation or ideology. In case you don't know her (she hasn't received much publicity) she's the good person without a gun who beat a person with a gun that was about to shoot some school children in Georgia.

I commend you for reading the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence but those two documents belong to Christians and non- Christians. I keep those two short documents on my iPad for quick reference, just in case someone misquotes them.

Rosalie, you probably would be surprised that some liberals saw the same movies you did, pray, visit the sick, served in the armed forces and do pretty much do all the things you say you do without the need to let others know how self- righteous they are.I'm always amazed how conservatives wrap themselves around the flag and think that they own the word "patriot."

There’s no doubt liberals have attended X-rated movies, had extra-marital affairs and have done what you would classify as sinful but they don’t profess to be without sin. Several years ago, the GOP ran on a family values platform which is commendable if you can hold that standard. Many conservatives fell from grace and the public was all too happy to call them hypocrites.Conservative thought it was a double standard.

Conservatism, whether you use it in a political or religious context, means that those who adopt that ideology; tend to hold on to their traditional attitudes and values. They are reluctant to change.

Liberalism is rarely used in a religious context because it is about change and justice and many times they are interconnected.

There’s nothing sinister about being a liberal or conservative.

I do believe this may be one of your best replies to a LTTE yet! Excellent!

Thank you very much...I saw the letter last night and I immediately decided that I was not going to engage in a tit- for- tat because that would be a waste of time. As I mentioned, its been a long time since I've seen a letter like the one she wrote and she although she wrote a tongue- in- cheek letter, she clearly thinks she is superior.

and her point is what?

I do most of the same things she does, but I didn't see her mention alcohol. I can add no alcohol to my "halo" list.
And, she should add discrimination to her list.

They say that President Obama has divided this Country? Not true!! Right-wing media has divided it more than ideology, or religious affiliation, ever could.

True but her letter made more sense that the one written by Furst Moore of Hallettsville.

Mr. Moore called the president “Obamashama” and said the raid to kill Osama bin Laden was a scam.Huh?

What’s in the Hallettsville water? We've been getting a lot of strange letters from there...:-)

About right.

Somebody poisoned the water hole...:-)

Really! Not one poster has come to her defense. That's pretty bad in this county because just the words liberal,Democrat or Obama should get you about 20 Amens...:-)

I think people are getting tired of the labels and people trying to portray the idea that if one is not a Conservative, then they are all things evil.

Mike said...

I agree but I think I have a slightly different take.

I don’t really mind the labels (a lot of people do) if it will help us to move the discussion along.

As you say there are some people who only use the word liberal in a pejorative way and we’ve had discussions with many of them. They will exaggerate our positions and blame it on what they believe to be our ideology. For example, some may think I would want to make a company build 100 miles east, rather than disturb a lone nest of Yellow-Billed Loons because they don’t factor in how far I will go…Other examples, are our difference on farm subsidies, public assistance or the EIC and we will debate those issues (in a civil way) because we are not bound by what some think a liberal position should be. …I admit, I may have called you a conservative once or twice because you didn’t toe the liberal line…:-)

I can only speak for myself and that’s more than enough for me to handle.

There's another train of thought: Those who always let everyone know that they are conservative.

1..It could be code for those who say "I want my country back" or "he/she is not one of us.
2. They don’t want anyone to mistake them for a liberal.
3. Their dad was a conservative and they inherited that ideology.
4. They think it's some kind of nobility
5. They want to fit in

You say what's in the water in Hallettsville? The same trash that's in Victoria.

Look for my second LTTE on Saturday. I struck back at them.

I think Democratic leaders have chosen to describe themselves as Progressives rather than use the old Liberal label.

Dictionary.Com
“favoring or advocating progress, change, improvement, or reform, as opposed to wishing to maintain things as they are, especially in political matters.”

You can see how it’s completely opposite of conservatism.

You can break it down even more by saying Progressives think government and governing can be part of the solution, whereas Conservatives do not.

Liberal is a lot like the old word “hippie” because conservatives won the war of messaging. People’s perception doesn’t necessarily coincide with what’s written in a dictionary. For example, in a heavily conservative town like Victoria it’s “neither you are a conservative or a liberal” because there’s no in between. You can say you don’t play that game but it’s like racial profiling, those people being profiling don’t want to play that game either.

With a person like Rosalie Sykora: I would accept her liberal definition of me because that’s all she knows.

Rusty Wallace, another LTTE guy, has apparently been following another Congress. That or he is deaf, dumb and blind.

Mike said...

Hey BigJ,
I was just joking because we have a lot of surrounding cities but a majority of the anti-Obama LTTE’s come from Hallettsville…Victoria is a much larger city and letters with a conservative point of view is to be expected….I I don’t know if that makes sense.

Yesterday, we had two LTTEs from Hallettsville. One was about Obamascare which didn’t make a lick of sense and the other one by Rusty Wallace, who is in support of 12 U.S. senators who are pandering to the base of their party.

Looking forward to LTTE number two.

Mike said...

Rusty Wallace’s first paragraph is a carbon copy of GOP talking points.

He knows shutting down the government would doom the GOP, so he is trying to say that the majority party will be responsible for that, if they don’t meet the minority party’s demands.

He says we cannot afford to fund Obamacare but in the meantime, Gov. Perry is asking for $100 million of Obamacare funds.. Psst,Rusty, the remaining hold out GOP governors are looking to see if they can apply without being labeled the hypocrites that they are.

Conservatives always bring out our children as being the victims of government spending. Funny, they don’t seem to mind defunding Head Start, food stamps, or have any interest in cleaning up the environment for today’s children.

I agree with the concept of “We the people” but that doesn’t just apply to conservatives. We the people spoke loud and clearly in 2008 and again in 2012.
