It must be part of the aging process

It could be  I’m getting older, or maybe it's because I've been retired for ten years but everyday I see, hear or experience things that takes me back to yesteryear. My wife says I have too much idle time on my hands, but her time is coming.

Yesterday, I picked up my wife in my junk keep (as she calls it) pickup from the Toyota dealer, where she was having some recall work being done. A smile came across my face, as it must have come across my step- dad when he used to pick us up in his jalopy. We offered to buy him a new car, but he wouldn’t take us up on it but one the reason was that my sister left him the car when she died and we understood. One of  my kids gave me the truck when they bought a new car. We were going to become a one-car  family once I retired, but we never got to experience the pitfalls of that. Today is one of those days  when the truck will come in handy, as I haul off all the junk I’ve been hoarding for years.

In fact, as I was loading my truck this morning, the weather reminded me of when we touched down at LAX the very first time. The California summer is what I  I've always heard  about; a bright sun but a pleasant 72°.

The other day one of our daughters asked my wife to cook her some beans because she was working late. I reminded my wife of the times my mom would cook supper complete with ice tea for us, and my step-dad would  always delivery it knowing it would make our night a little easier. The aroma alone was better than eating takeout again. How did they know that a home-cooked meal was what we needed? I bet they were part of that continuing cycle that has been passed on for ages and taken for granted sometimes.

I love living in today’s world, and I’m keeping up in our age of technology, but I remember just tearing up the old receipts before putting them the trash can for pickup. Today, I ran them through our micro- cut paper shredder first because identity thieves can piece together information from paper that was shredded using a cross-cut  shredder.  Wouldn't that have sounded absurd   20 years ago?

Maybe it's just me but I've haven't seen too many year- in- review 2012 or articles about New Year resolutions...Are these rituals a thing of the past or they less popular?

Seems to me that we were inundated with those items in years past. I don't miss them.

I think there were other things taking up news space--the Newtown shooting and the stubborn republicans! I've seen a couple.

Today's technology--yeah, my cell contract is up in April and i am going to break down and add texting to my plan. I have resisted it, but I guess I better get with the program, or I am going to be left behind...

Good point.

I'm adding more & more texting because once you get used to it it's a handy tool...Instead of yelling upstairs to my wife I just send her an iMessage..Instead of guessing if my children are busy I'll just leave a iMessage since they all have iPhones...So far iMessages between iPhones are free between iPhones.

I was just in an antique store today and man, did some of the things in that store take me back to my grandmother's house, aunts and uncles, and maybe a past life or two. LOL

I haven't been to an antique store in ages but it used to a good place to get some good used sturdy desks and file cabinets.

Ramsey's has some good conversation pieces on their wall.

What's with Victorians crashing into buildings?

I went to Office Depot this afternoon but the front door was roped off,a firetruck, wrecker truck and police car blocked the entrance.

No building is safe but there's no up front parking so how could someone ram into the building head on?

Which one was it? The one by Golden Corral?

Speaking of sturdy furniture. That antique store in Edna across from Efficiency Air, has a Tell City dining table and chairs, or at least that is what it looks like. I have a table like that, but the chairs are a little different, but just as heavy as mine. My table and chairs are around 32 years old, and other than normal wear and tear, the set is still in pretty good shape. These sets last a life time if you don't get people leaning back on the chairs, which is not allowed at my house.
I think if you ever want to go into a place that has lots of old furniture, and just about anything else you want, go in there. I saw a old gas pump in there. He's a little high, but will haggle.

That's the one

ahhh, I've been there and didn't know that there was no upfront parking, so had to (well didn't have to, but did) pull in and turn around. Maybe someone did that and forgot to put it in reverse while they tried to back up.

I arrived right as the first police car was arriving. I needed printer ink!

They do have parking there, and in front of Dollar General.

The car hit on the Right side of the front doors where parking is not allowed....I never see any cars there.

That was my second time there and the car was already on the wrecker....We have to lead the nation in store front crashes.

We finally used our Olive Garden gift card and it was worth the 30 minute wait...We got there @ 5:15 thinking we were beating the crowd..I've never seen their parking lot when it wasn't full.

Let me redo my comment--There is parking to the right of where the awning stops, and there is parking to the left of where the awning stops 9that would be in front-almost-of Dollar General. They were having folks move their cars on the right.

I am wondering of this woman was parked or parking, or just kept going down one of the lanes of the parking lot. We'll never know. I just know this, if i had left the house 10 minutes sooner, i would have been in the store and it would have scared the snot out of me!

They said these folks didn't suffer serious injusry and I am glad for that.

I don't go in that one very often, but isn't that the area where the checkouts are?

I know in the other one, it is.

Yes, it was. I ended up at the other stoare by Target and i couldn't find a thing! For the same store, they are so configured differently. The other store only had two employees in it, and both were working the 'Customer Service' area over on the far side of the store. That is where we were checking out. I never could find a 'check out' place. I just went to where everyone was standing in line with merchandise.

I like the one by Golden Corral better too for the boxes they have displayed, but I don't get to that part of town very often.
