How do Automated Water Meters work?

We deploy the Aclara Fixed Network AMI STAR® System, using a wireless fixed network system that has three components:

Meter Transmission Unit (MTU): This unit is factory connected to the water meter and “reads” the meter every hour. Every six hours, it sends its information to a Data Collection Unit.
Data Collection Unit (DCU). A total of 77 DCUs are located throughout the city on our facilities and City-owned poles and rooftops. The DCUs transmit the meter readings to the SF Water, Power and Sewer’s Network Control Computer.
AMI Network Control Computer (NCC): The SFPUC billing system will use this information to calculate the amount of water used and create bills. Eventually, data from the NCC will also be made available to customers on our website.Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02668070524354374505noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1674561724432497133.post-76661242184096604742012-06-22T19:31:31.956-05:002012-06-22T19:31:31.956-05:00How is the meter going to know if there's a le...How is the meter going to know if there's a leak or the bathtub is filling up? I know, it will know if there is a leak on the city side of the meter, a drop in water pressure.

But hey! If the water meters send data back to the utility Dept. they have to have most likely wifi access, unless the city is going to hard wire every one of them.

Soooo... can us taxpayers use the city paid for and in place wifi?Legionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16943732661912414361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1674561724432497133.post-51906260575623548922012-06-22T18:23:19.890-05:002012-06-22T18:23:19.890-05:00Our city is right on top of the cutting edge of te...Our city is right on top of the cutting edge of technology...Just saw where we will getting new high tech water meters which will take readings every 15 minutes and send the data back to a billing database...The meter will be able to detect and locate water leaks...I didn't know the old manual read meters began less accurate as they aged....BTW...The city won't charge us for the instillation which will start in July and end in January but our monthly will see a slight increase to pay for the 23 ,000 meters...Slight...:-)Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02668070524354374505noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1674561724432497133.post-77822969298756014762012-06-22T13:27:02.348-05:002012-06-22T13:27:02.348-05:00Interesting observation!Interesting observation!Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02668070524354374505noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1674561724432497133.post-66397477648218994512012-06-22T13:02:06.877-05:002012-06-22T13:02:06.877-05:00Off topic of this blog, but I do believe you are b...Off topic of this blog, but I do believe you are being wooed by the Vic Ad judging by a recent jpuente comment on your blog over there... ;-)Kylenoreply@blogger.com
